Dr. Melissa Gilliam on Disparities in Sex Education - October 18, 2011

We hosted Dr. Melissa Gilliam, M.D. For a lunch time talk at the Law School. Her research relates to sex education, reproductive health information, and access to health care in the city of Chicago. We co-sponsored this talk with Law Students for Reproductive Justice because we thought it was important to bring attention to the causes and consequences of teen pregnancy in the black community. Dr. Gilliam’s research highlighted the differences in how different states provide access to certain reproductive health resources.

Dr. Christopher Manning on Earl B. Dickerson - October 21, 2011

We hosted Dr. Christopher Manning of Loyola University of Chicago for a lunch time talk at the Law School on Earl B. Dickerson, the Law School’s first black graduate. Dr. Manning’s scholarship deals with race in the city of Chicago, the history of the Civil Rights Movement, and more. Dr. Manning gave a historical account of the life of Mr. Dickerson and helped to place his career in historical context. He mixed his knowledge of the history of Chicago and its race relations with the highlights of Dickerson’s career and gave us all a better sense of who Earl B. Dickerson was.

Panel on Education Reform - November 8, 2011

We hosted a lunch time panel on the steps that can be taken to improve the education system in the United States. With professionals from various lines of work, we had a constructive conversation about the problems, the consequences, and some of the potential solutions. Topics ranged from assessing just how serious of a problem education is to litigation as tool for reform. With approximately 50 people in attendance, the panel engaged in a thoughtful dialogue and was well received by all.
